2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

I've got a 2003 Expedition, that started running rough the other day, and the "check engine soon" light came on. I went by Auto Zone, and they hooked up the diag machine (OBD II I think). The read out stated that cylender 6 was misfiring and that all other cylenders were randomly missfiring. I thought ignition module, but there ain't one. Anybody got any thought? Are there any recalls or service bulletin I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance,

Red

Question Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

I don't know for sure, but check out your coil packs. Also, these Tritons are known for vacuum leaks...somewhere around the back side of the intake on a plastic 90 degree boot. How many miles you guys got on these things?

Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

This has just happened with my wifes 98 expedition with the 5.4 ltr triton. More then likely you have moisture (i spelt that wrong i think) within your coil packs or a possible a bad fuel injector. 1 st we changed plugs thinking it was that but then it gotten worse. Unfortunately for her, 3 fuel injectors had went bad along with three coil packs (moisture). After $480.00 later. All was well. It'll be one of those 2 things.

Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

Hello, Im in the same boat here. I have a 1999 expedition 4.6 113000 miles and I have replaced plugs(twice) wires (twice) both coil packs and 1 injector (#2), some days I have the miss more ofter, others less often.... It does feel like I have lost some power though. I still get the sputter and error code of PO302 all the time, I have it erased and its back the next day. It doesnt burn any oil and no water useage.(leaky heads) Any help would be great ! Thanks in advance !

Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

Well being a Ford/Lincoln tech I think I may be of some help. Most likely you have a bad coil.. although the chances of it are high that it is #6 for your P0306, its not always that way. Sometimes when a coil goes bad it emittes whats called RFI or radio frequency interference. In other word, your computer or PCM, controlles your coils and everythin else on the engine. When a coil emmites a strong enough "radio signal" from the charge and discharge of the coil, it can make the PCM go crazy and make other cylinders misfire. I have seen coils make the vehicles stall out for no reason etc. But more times than not its just that #6 coil.

The response about the vacuum leak although they do experience those leaks, it wont cause that misfire and your code would have been accompanied with a P0171, and or a P0174, lean codes.

Then there is the possibility of having a burnt valve. A burnt valve will cause your P0306 but generally you would notice a constant skip and it wouldnt be random.

Hope this helps

Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

I have used these forums extensively. Let Autozone or whomever diagnose the problem for free, beats paying for it! .....

I was getting the same errors. P0306, Spark misfires, Ignition Coil Misfires and others. I have a 2003 Exp. Eddie Bauer with 70,000 miles. I just replaced all coil packs, spark plugs and ICM (Ignition Control Module). I also had to replace a dying battery. In the past, I was replacing a plug coil here and there. It would last for a while then the same rough idle and service engine light. I am fortunate enough to have a brother in law who runs a parts distribution warehouse. But check Ebay and other online sites to save money.

After completing all the work, my engine was running really rough. I double checked everything and had loosened my PCV vacuum hose. After reconnecting everything, the engine ran a little better.

I finally corrected the rough idle after disconnecting the battery and all three connections to the Control Module on the firewall passenger side (EEC). That reset the computer. After I hooked everything back up the truck runs smooth as ever. I don't know if I made a mistake by swapping batteries while the truck was running. Shadetree Mechanics at its finest.....

Anyway, here are the codes if anyone needs them.

Re: 2003 Expedition missin on #6 and all others

Update:
After replacing ICM (Ignition Control Module) in May. Plugs in June, Coils Packs in July, checking for vacuum leaks.... The truck ran great until yesterday. Now I am Idling rough. Most of the other misfires were at running speeds.

Should I have replaced everything at once?

I am really frustrated.....
