2003 Expedition Vibration during turns

Folks,

Does anyone else have this problem? When I turn a right or left corner while driving, I hear a vibration noise and feel a vibration at the steering wheel. It happens on every turn, if the Expedition is hot or cold. It feels as if the ABS brake mechanism is calibrating or vibrating or something...could be something else. My friend has 2003 Expedition also, and his does same.

What is this? Anyone know? Once I straighten out the wheel this vibration/sound goes away.

Very strange!

Please advise and thanks!

Dan

Re: 2003 Expedition Vibration during turns

Dan,

You have just explained the same problem that I have in my 99 expedition. It is a complete piece of shit. At this moment in time, I am working on several problems with it. If you get information before I do, let me know.

John

Re: 2003 Expedition Vibration during turns

Well first off John. If you have issues with your truck there is no need to hit every thread in this section about it. One thread will do. If you disclike your truck then by all means hate it, but telling us in every thread is not going to help out anyone else that has an issue. You are just making yourself look like an idiot in here by doing this.

Dan: I am not sure if I talked to you in the IRC channel or not, but I explained to someone there some of the issues and the TSBs associated with the problems that you are experiencing.

here is a recap.

TSBs that can be looked at. Some are rear end issues, but they have been known to cause some of the issues you are experiencing.

Make : FORD
Model : EXPEDITION
Year : 2003

-------------------------
Make : FORD
Model : EXPEDITION
Year : 2003
Service Bulletin Num : 16606
Date of Bulletin: FEB 01, 2003
Component: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
Summary: POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE LEAK.
------------------------------
Make : FORD
Model : EXPEDITION
Year : 2003
Service Bulletin Num : 16092
Date of Bulletin: AUG 01, 2002
Component: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSISTUMP
Summary: SOME VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT POWER STEERING NOISE / VIBRATION FROM THE AREA OF THE POWER STEERING PUMP ACCOMPANIED BY BLUID LEAKAGE FROM THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR CAP.

Hope that helps you out some Dan. Since it is a 2003 you should be able to take it to the deal under warranty. If they say that it is not affected by the above then have them prove it too you. There are tons of '03 Expo owners that are experiencing this issue to only be turned away from the service department.

Now also understand that if it does not fall in the above that it could be the problem that they have diagnosed, but have no cure for as of yet. I have not seen anything in the bulletins on the Ford Systems regarding any fix as of yet.

cool Re: 2003 Expedition Vibration during turns

Dan,

I just had my 2004 XLT repaired for the similar problem. Does the sound you are hearing sound like you are riding over the rumble strips that are on the side of the highway? I had the same sound when the truck sat for a while and then I drove it and accelerated during a turn.

I printed out the technical service bulletin and emailed it to the dealer prior to dropping off my truck. They informed me that they were aware of the issue and replaced the rear-differential, clutch assembly, and synthetic transaxle fluid. I've had the truck back for about a week now and the problem has disappeared. The technical service bulletins are: 0364 & 16923.

Go to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr.../tsbsearch.cfm

The dealer should be able to fix your problem free of charge since your truck is still under warranty and also since it is a known problem that is listed as a Technical Service Bulletin.

Lunatic is the answer guy for this forum (BIG-UPS!!! to LUNATIC). Lunatic's info. should help you. It helped me research and get this problem fixed. Make the dealer fix it. Under no circumstances should you allow them to tell you it's not a problem. My dealer know about it and fixed it, so it can be fixed.

Good Luck....

Re: 2003 Expedition Vibration during turns

Dan (and John),

I am experiencing the exact same problem with my 1999 Expedition as both of you have described.

(Thanks John for posting that you had the same problem with your 1999. It explains that it is not specific to 2003 models only).

Dan/John, What was the final diagnosis on your problems? Was there any TSB/Recall associated with the problem?

Thanks

Raheel
