98 Expy just died. HELP.

Here's the scenario: Expy was running fine. I stopped
and filled up with 93 octane fuel at a gas station that
gets heavy traffic. Left the gas station and less than
a mile later it started to bog down when I stepped on
the accelerator. Made it home, shut her down and then
she wouldn't start. She cranks and makes an attempt to
start and then just stalls. I checked the fuel pressure and
there was less than 10 psi with the key turned to on. When
cranking it shoots up to 35 psi. The relay is good and so
is the fuse. I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the
problem and still have the same issue. Checked the fuel inertia
shut off unit and that was not the problem. Replaced the
fuel filter and nothing.

So for recap:
Replaced fuel pump and it is working I can hear it kick on when I turn the key.
Replaced the fuel filter
Fuel pump fuse and relay both good
Inertia safety switch not tripped.

Anyone have any ideas? I am at my wits end.

Have you checked with the gas station? One of ours got a bad batch of gas and caused many cars to have problems similar to yours. Put some of the gas in a small cap and try to light it with a match. Away from any large amount. If it lights, the gas should be alright.

I had similar problems last year. Turned out to be water in my tank.

You might try adding a couple of bottles of fuel drier to the tank, let it sit a day or so before trying to start.

Re: 98 Expy just died. HELP.

Update:

I added a bottle of dry gas equivalent and let it sit for a few hours.
Results: She starts and runs rough for about a minute and then
dies. This is an improvement since before she didn't start at all.
I added a second bottle and will wait until tomorrow to see if it
works. Looks like my first thoughts were correct since it happened
immediately after fueling up. I just let people that were supposedly
knowledgeable tell me that it wasn't possible that it was bad
fuel because the station gets so much traffic. Of course I don't
think they took into consideration that I filled up with 93 octane and
most folks are filling up with 87 due to the economy.

They can sell a lot of fuel but the trucks bring fuel in and sometimes they run out and buy from another supplier.

I'm thinking that's the case OR the fact that I bought
93 that doesn't really move these days due to the
economy. Tank just sits there and fills with water.

Re: 98 Expy just died. HELP.

The dry gas did not work and I siphoned some fuel out previous
to adding dry gas. So I took the fuel and poured some out
put a match to it and it lit so it appears the fuel is not
bad. I guess some things that are left are Fuel Pressure
Regulator. I also read that the Crank Position Sensor may
be the problem. I will keep everyone posted.

Re: 98 Expy just died. HELP.

Installed a new fuel pressure regulator and that
was not it. I sprayed the TB with starter fluid
and she fired up for about 10 seconds until the
starter fluid was used up. So I know it's not the
spark side and not the air side. It is on the fuel
side. I have replaced the fuel pressure regulator,
fuel filter, fuel pump. The pump relay and fuse are
fine. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the
key to on.

Any ideas anyone? Once again she was running fine
until I filled up with fuel. Could be just coincidence especially
since the fuel burns well when lit with a match. I don't
want to keep buying new parts that aren't the problem.
She cranks and makes an attempt to start, runs for about
a second and then dies.

Do you have any way to check the fuel pressure? Also listen to the injectors while someone is cranking it to see if you hear them ticking.

Not to be a smartass, but... what you have spent in parts and time so far guessing at a fix you could have had it towed to the shop and repaired right the first time!

BTW... just because you can get the fuel to burn doesn't mean there isn't water in it - it only takes a small amount of water to create problems. Although it will take a lot of water to get it to stall.

I wouldn't rule out a spark issue just yet - the coil packs are a know problem area on the 5.4L.

Also, crank sensors usually don't just die all of a sudden, they will usually act up for sometime before going out completely.
