98 Navigator stuck in low 4x4 ??

I knew this to be a problem, my teenage son did not. He did a shift out of
4x4 low in Park, not Neutral like you are supposed to. Now it is stuck in low. I drove it home on the highway 80 miles yesterday in low... doing 30mph max... ouch. I am thinking its got to be someting other than a bad shift motor, it has done this a few times when shiftted when not in neutral. I just had to keep working at it... but this time I did not suceed. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: 98 Navigator stuck in low 4x4 ??

He must have really jammed the transfer case lever to shift it to 4LO in park. I'm guessing you've tried to put it back while in Park to no avail. Driving on the highway in 4LO is definitely bad on the drive-train. Since you can get it into drive without a problem, try reversing the truck and then putting the trans into neutral with the truck still rolling and then try to shift out of 4LO. The gears probably binded up rather tight and perhaps that's all it needs is a shake in the opposite direction. It's a trick with older trucks that have problems shifting from 4HI to 4LO - let the truck roll a bit. Just to give you a heads up the gears may chatter a bit but its worth a try.
