My 99 Expedition has the ABS light on and the garage I took it to says the code indicates a faulty rear wheel speed sensor. Fine! But I also get this horrific noise from somewhere on the drivers side too. The mechanic said it is from that sensor. How does a sensor cause noise. It sounds almost like I'm dragging a metal basket. It is not a solid noise and happens only once in a while. It doesn't sound like something scraping under the car or metal on metal. Any clues????????

ABS sensor in rear diff maybe bad if that is what the mechanic said. As far as the noise goes, I would remove (or have someone remove) the wheels and inspect the brakes and stuff.

Thanks, apparently replacing the sensor took care of the ABS light but not the noise. The garage is now saying the entire differential may need to be replaced. I don't know anything abou this so I'm not sure even what to ask the mechanic. The brakes, pads, rotors, etc..... have been checked. I was told the suspension looks fine. So at this point I'm at the mercy of the mechanic. They have been fair so far but have had my car for two weeks (not charging me for time and labor) and claim they cannot get an exact diagnosis for the noise. What else should I ask them?

I would ask if they checked the axle bearings. Those will make alot of noise when bad.
