99 Expedition Won't start - Ford Forums

Can anyone help me!!!! I have a 99 Expedition that randomly fails to start. I've had the fuel pump checked (OK), I've had a diagnostic test (all OK). I have no answers from the Ford dealer and my personal mech. The problem started around 5 months ago. At first, after it failed to start, I had to wait around 5 minutes then try again and she fired right up. Now, it won't start for several days. I try and try. It cranks and sounds like it wants to start but it never turns over. I only have 46K on the vehicle. The last time I had to tow it to the shop and in the middle of the diagnostic test, the vehicle started. It is soooo frustrating!!!. I've also noticed that the Check Suspension light randomly goes on. Then several days later it shuts off. I've reset the switch but it still happens. I know it's a big request, but any one have any answers. I'll listen to anything at this point.

Eddie,

I moved your post to the correct area. the area you had it set up in was for Site Support not vehicle support. In here you are more likely to get a response quicker than if in the Site Support section, since that section is for support issues related to this website itself.

Re you issues on starting.

1) Have you checked the Inline fuel filter for being clogged?
2) Have you checked to make sure that the fuel lines are not pinched.
3) Have you checked battery connections
4) Have they tested the ignition module itself?
5) Have you had the dealer Flash your ECU with the latest release? (this will fix some issues that are ghost in the system and leading up to the issues you are seeing)
6) If it starts then dies you might look at replacing the IAC
7) Check the terminal at the starter itself for a problem with rust. If Rusted then replace cable.
8) If wiring from negative battery terminal to starter looks good then check the starter relay bolted on the firewall on the passenger side. It will act up when it is warm.

That is about it that I can think of off the top of my head. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for moving this to the correct area. In regards to the problem. When it doesn't start, it still cranks like it would normally. It just doesn't fire. The new ECU update seems interesting. I will pass this on to my mechanic. Is this upgrade only available through Ford? If so, I will schedule sooon. thanks again.

The flash is through Ford. You can call them and enquire with your vin if yours will fall into requiring a reflash.

Has there been a code check on the truck yet? When I say code check I mean have you checked for any obdii error codes? I saw you said a diagnostics test.... I am not sure what that involves with your mechanic....but if you have not had the ecu scanned I would do so. Go to Autozone and they will have the ability to check the ECU for codes for you at no charge.

If you have codes post them here and I can or someone else can give you the definitions of what they mean and possibly what to do to correct the issues they are showing.

Personally, I would look at battery connections and the starter cable. If they look fine then I would look at the replacing the starter relay. I think they are running around 15$ right now at AZ. Now this is a silly question. Have you checked the battery itself? Has your mechanic checked the starter itself?
