Can Misfire Cause Tranny Problems????

Hi Everyone, new member so bear with me if this has been discussed before (although a search came back with nothing).

Recently I've been having some tranny slip problems. My vehicle is a 2000 w/5.4 and the E40D/4R100 tranny. I tow a boat and just recently the tranny started "slipping" on me really bad...to the point that the vehicle was barely making it down the road. My check engine light was flashing like crazy and but the engine wasn't racing when the slip would occur???? I thought "great, more money for a new tranny". Well, being a person who likes to fix things himself and save money didn't run to the dealer. It's not my main ride so I let it sit while doing research. Anyways, I had to drive it recently (not towing) and it didn't slip at all and then the very next trip (not towing) had it slipping like crazy then the following trip no slip. The check engine light has not stayed on but only flashes when slipping.

I spoke to a tech and he mentioned that codes stay in the system for about 50 key cycles so I ran down to Advanced Auto and they only pulled a P0303 code which is cylinder #3 misfire....... So, is this related in some way? Wouldn't I have a tranny code on there too. I am so boggled and PO'd right now but it would be an early Christmas present to replace a coil pack and fix the problem.

Help anyone!!!!!

Re: Can Misfire Cause Tranny Problems????

Most likely your trans is fried. Once your transmissions starts slipping like that it doesnt take long for damage to occur. How many miles on the truck? the miss fire will generally not effect trans operation but in some cases may cause torgue converter slip codes. Know what I have seen on some expeditions with the 4r100 is the one way cluth in the torque converter fail and cause no movement or the truck will barely move. With that type of failure it is just mechanical and will hae nothing to do with the miss fire. hope this helps
