Clicking sound from inside rear of '04 Expedition

There is a noticable clicking sound from the rear of my 2004 Expedition. It started yesterday with the rear A/C turned on and stopped when I turned off the rear A/C. Today, the sound is there even with all A/C turned off. The engine does not need to be running to hear the noise, but the key needs to be in the full "on" position (the one just before starting the engine). Any ideas?

I have not done a whole lot of work with rear A/C, but it sounds like an actuator going bad. I would remove the rear side panel where the noise is to investigate.

Re: Clicking sound from inside rear of '04 Expedition

Well devlin, I have the exact same problem but on the 2003 Expedition. As Mr. Mullet suggested I pulled all the interior lining (I mean pulled with my hands, except seat belt anchors) and found two positioners on the plenum. I removed the one that switches between upper and lower passenger compartment (forward most) and found a gear stripped inside. The other positioner is for the temperature control, if it doesn’t break the bank, I will change it too so we won’t be going back in soon.

It is one of the blend door actuators. YL5H 19E 616 they wear our and make that sound because they are trying to shut the door that is already shut.
