Considering buying an 03 expedition. What issues have you come across?

Hello guys! Noob here. Considering buying an 03 Eddie Bauer with app 62k miles on it. Great looking truck and I believe the miles are pretty decent. What are the known issues on this particular year. I'm converting over from having a (dare I say here) Mercedes E320. Just had to have a big truck without spending $90 grand! Lemme know what you guys think. Thanks!

Re: Considering buying an 03 expedition. What issues have you come across?

Historically the 2003s were bad news all the way around.

I had an early 2004 (manufactured in 2003) and still had all or most of the problems of the 2003.

I'd would avoid it like the plague.

I know some people will disagree but i'm on my 5th Expy.---1997, 1999, 2000 which was the best one, 2004 the worst of all , and 2007 Limited E.L. so far so good. 2007 may end up being the best of all. The ride is by far superior to all the others.

Just don't do it.

Here's a list of the Tech Service Bulletins on this vehicle.

Re: Considering buying an 03 expedition. What issues have you come across?

*knocks on wood*

Our 2003 EB Expedition has 133k miles and besides changing the fluids, the truck has been great. We beat it up pretty good and we have only had no issue.

The Expo would studder and stall randomly. The car wouldn't throw any codes. Took the dealer 2 months to realize the computer had a surge on it and was acting strange. Replaced that and no issues since.

as expybob said, my early 04 built in 03 had many of the same issues. Finally got rid of it for an 06 100% better(knock on wood).

I have an 03 and the only real problems have been the power seat thing and the rear a/c blend door going out.

I have not had any major issues with my 2003 Expedition with the exception of the heated/ac seat going out and blend door going out

Re: Considering buying an 03 expedition. What issues have you come across?

Mine's been a great truck ( 125k miles on it so far...). Only been to the dealer's shop twice when it was new for the side mirror position programmer and then for the rear A/C blend door actuator replacement (all under warranty...). Ask the owner if those problems came up and if they were fix by the dealer (most likely they did/were...). If the sparkplugs are original I would replace them with some NGK's or more Motorcraft plugs. Look at the coolant, it should've been flushed and replaced by now and look new. For brake pads I recommend Akebono Ceramics, (Tire Rack...). The stock brake pads dusted up real bad. I replaced them at about 2k miles. If the rear A/C actuator clicks you can just unplug it and be done with it, no more worries. How's the paint? Particularly along the edge of panels it was pretty thin. Look for any pitting or evidence of rust in the channels up on the roof. The forward ends on the front and rear ends on the back channels. What are you looking at paying for it? Overall they are a good buy. About 16 mpg overall. But I use mine for towing the boats and family around.

Considering buying an 03 expedition. What issues have you come across?

Just had engine rebuilt in 03 ford expedition. Has 1,000 miles on new engine. Husband noticed defroster air wasn't getting warm. Checked the coolant and it was empty. Checked oil , noticed under cap it was a creamy Carmel color. :( any advise? Was told by mechanic it just evaporated and I need to check it all the time and color under cap was condensation. Is this correct??
