Is there any way to disable the airbag on the passanger side?

I understand if the seat belt is not fastened the airbag is disabled. That's how I read it in the owners manual. The older Fords had weight-on-seat sensors in the seat bottom but they've done away with that. The driver's seat is always assumed to be occupied, so that airbag is always armed.

To disable airbags, you need a waiver from NHTSA (so you'd have to have a good reason, like a critically ill child that needs full-time supervision), and then to find a mechanic willing to take on that liability.

The reason it does not have a switch to deactivate the passengers side bag is because the seatbelt buckle has a switch in it to let the module know if there is a buckled passenger in the seat and will determine how to deploy the dual state second generation bags during a crash. Ford used to have seat weight sensors for that but went to this injstead. If you want to do away with it you will need to contact Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They have forms that need tro be filled out and qualifications that need to be met in order to have the switch installed. "

Hi,

I need to disable the airbag so I can install a child seat for my newborn girl (2 days old today).

Here in Norway most Expeditions are sold as 3 seaters to save tax.
I have a small seat up front in the middle, where the armrest normaly is.

I will try to call the Norwegian dealer and ask what they recomend.

You may post in the Canadian and International forum of Car Seat.Org - Carseat, Vehicle & Child Passenger Safety Community Forums with your full situation. A rear-facing car seat would not be safe in the front seat of an American Expedition, especially in the middle. You would have to disable both the driver and passenger airbag, which would be worse for the driver and any other passenger. I know it is common in Scandinavian countries to install car seats in the front, and it's a safe thing to do if you have a keyed airbag switch, but it's just not a safe thing to do if you don't. Is there a reason the baby can't ride in the back?

Hi JessFord,

I don't have any seats in the back. In Norway we have a insane tax system on this type of cars.
The price for a new Exp with all the seats and registrated i have to pay approx $280 000. (1,4 mill NOK)
You can also registrate it as 2 or 3 seater, and then you pay approx half $ 140 000 ( 730 000 Nok). You also have to install a wall behind the drivers/passenger seats. This room i designated for cargo.
This is the version I have. When the car is older then 10 years you can put the seats in for free. 3rd of october my car is 9 years and if i install the seats after that date te tax is only $6400. Right now it's $14400

Tax is based on age, weight, eng volume and Horse power.

And for the record I am talking about green US Dollars

Are your figures correct on price ? $280,000 seems an incredible price for a Ford Exp !!!!!! You may have trouble getting anyone telling you how to disable airbag on this forum . I know it's not allowed or permitted on UK forums I'm on .That and immobilisers .
