evap can purge solenoid

Anyone have a wiring diagram so I can trace back the wiring? Cell is on for circuit malfunction and I replaced the solenoid. Vacuum lines look new. It says circuit malfunction anyways so I'm assuming electrical. If somebody can post a diagram so I can run some new wire I would appreciate it.

Re: evap can purge solenoid

okay, so it looks like there are two things here.

From what i'm looking up, the PURGE SOLENOID is on the firewall, and is unrelated to the vent solenoid, which I am told is located on the frame rail in the 97 expedition. Any idea what it looks like so I can find it and see about getting it replaced?

I can't find any parts results for it at any parts places, so I don't think it's a repairable part, but I can at least check the wiring for it.

Please, somebody help me. I'm tired of seeing my CEL.

Re: evap can purge solenoid

The canister is mounted under the truck near the spare tire. The vent solenoid is attached to it. There's a good chance it's just a bad connection to it.

Re: evap can purge solenoid

so the vent solenoid is different than the purge solenoid. Is it easily accessible and can you see it from looking under the truck?

Re: evap can purge solenoid

I just had another P1451 on our '01 F150 5.4. 5 years ago I gave the dealer $260 to fix it the first time and it failed again last month for the same reason. The wire between the PCM and the solenoid broke.

The solenoid is directly in front of the spare tire on the F150 and real easy to see.

One side has a red wire which has +12v on it when the ignition is on. The other side has a violet/white wire which goes back to the PCM at pin 67.

The solenoid measured 56 ohms.

I went to Radio Shack and bought a 50 ohm 10 watt power resistor (they come 2 in a pack for an outrageous $1.99). I took out the battery tray to access the big PCM main connector and disconnected it. I found pin 67 and spliced one end of a new wire to it. I connected the other end of this wire to one end of the 50 ohm resistor. The other end of the resistor connects to the bottom post on the solenoid through a 5 amp fuse.

I cleared the code with my lap top and closed the hood.

pin67---------50 ohm res---------5 amp fuse---------12 volt power

I have no idea if your car is the same as mine cannister vent-wise so you are doing this at your own risk. If 12 volts somehow goes directly to pin 67, you will damage or destroy the PCM.

Re: evap can purge solenoid

i climbed under there and took some pictures. Is this the canister and solenoid?

I also took a picture of the wires, so somebody could let me know which one was the correct one I needed to look at.

There is a huge cylinder mounted to the top of the drivers side frame rail, with vacuum lines connected to it, and a connector at the top of it. There is also a couple plugs further back on the rail with a white wire that connects to the frame of the truck, and another plug that goes up into the rail somewhere, not sure what either are for.

Re: evap can purge solenoid

Mine is a rectangular box, about 6" long, 4" high, and a couple of inches deep. The solenoid sits on top of it. The wiring harness plugs into the solenoid directly, no other connectors involved. It is directly down the center line of the truck about 8" in front of the spare tire
