Expedition gas mileage

I just purchased a used 02 Expedition. I love it! I do however wonder if anyone can offer suggestions to increase my fuel mileage. I have run 4 tanks and am getting 12.9mpg. I read at the EPA it should get 14 to 17. We have changed the air filter. I do not have my foot in it and I stick to the speed limit. I drive 22 miles to work 3 days a week and it is 95% freeway. No check engine lights are on and it runs like a champ. Any suggestions or ideas? Thank you. OOPs....It has a 5.4 Tritan V8

Re: Expedition gas mileage

Be thankful your getting that good of mileage. The window sticker on my nav said 13 to 18 per gallon. I have yet to get even 13 miles per gallon. They must have calculated the gas mileage going down a hill with tail wind.

I really thought it would be better. My husband has an 01 F150 supercrew with the same engine and gear ratio and it gets 15 in town and 17 freeway. Too bad huh? Guess if there is no magical solution I will be happy I don't have a Navigator. He He. Thanks

Re: Expedition gas mileage

to make sure you get better mileage check your tire pressure, keep your injectors clean, keep all uneccesary stuff of our vehicle, and next time you are at the pumps, use premium it might cost 2-5 $ more when filling up but believe me it pays back

Re: Expedition gas mileage

My 2003 Expedition gets 15mpg normally on the highway and 14mpg towing my 2,000lb boat. I too would be interested in a way to increase my gas milage. Didn't I hear that someone invented a product that increases your gas milage 10+mpg?

Re: Expedition gas mileage

I have an 2wd '04 Exp. with the 5.4L motor and 3.73 gears.

I regularly get 16-17 frwy (mostly empty) and about 15 or so around town. Towing it drops to 13-14 mpg. And that's on California gas which has less energy do to our "oxygination" which means more alcohol. I get about 1.5-2 mpg better when traveling out of state. The best I've seen was 19.5mpg on 1 tank running from Las Cruces NM to Pheonix AZ, but that was rare. The rest of that trip (CA-AZ-NM & back) I was getting 17-18 frwy on AZ-NM gas. I was pretty much averaging 70-75 mph with 2 people and a light load. I've made the same trip loaded and towing (~2,100 lbs) and gotten 13-13.5 mpg avg.

I check my mileage by using the trip meter and dividing the mileage traveled by the gallons put in.

I always run regular fuel and it never knocks so no need for premium.

Re: Expedition gas mileage

A K&N air filter, oil change, pressure in your tires, run two runs of Techron fuel additive...I fill up solely at Chevron stations. They have the best additives for cleaning your fuel line. I started about a month and a half ago at about 12.5mpg...now I'm sitting around 15.25mpg. It's a few pennies more a gallon, but it's better for your engine.

I drive to New Mexico every year and have to change my tires this year. Ford put BF Goodrich on after the Firestone recall. Now they are recommending either Michelin LTX M/S or Yokahama. What do you have?

Re: Expedition gas mileage

Ok, on the sticker that you read at the dealership, those are the mileage ratings for using the truck in supreme conditions. When they test for gas mileage, its never over 85 degrees outside, the A/C is off, the tire pressure is perfect and they actually do the legal posted speed limit. Unless you enjoy driving in a sauna, and being passed by senior citizens, you will not likely see the posted gas mileage. However, as suggested, get a K&N airfilter kit, always run the tire size, and pressure suggested by the manufacture, and if you can control your gas foot, change the setting on your chip. Your shift ratio and air to fuel ratio are can be changed along with a few other things, this should squeak you out another 2 to 4 mpg.
