Gents – Has anyone replaced factory installed HID Low Beam bulbs on a Navigator? I have a 2006 Navigator, I’m sure the day will come when I’ll have to replace the Low Beam headlight bulbs. The manual states that it can only be done by the dealer. Really??? Why can’t I do it? Is the HID bulb available on eBay or after-market?

the hid ballast is in the housing...you can't do it yourself. you would have to bake them
(in oven)for 2 hrs at 350 degrees, open them,then reseal them... major pita!
better off buying after market ebay headlights...the ones i bought had
the 50watt 8000k hid kit allready installed for 170.00 for both lights.
(w/blacked out housing/s)
looks killer, & and i can save the stockers, or sell them for 200 each.

great timing i might add.

btw, my 03 has the hid's too, and the after market ones i replaced them with,
are much brighter, as stock hid lights are usually 35watt @ 4000k.

you can replace them...I've did a test run a few months ago. You need to remove the 3 bolts, remove the wireharness. from the back you will see two large rubber "cup" covering the bulb areas, remove the one for the low beam and you will see two clips, be very careful...the base is square in shape and the bulb itself is longer than standard bulb.

^ he doesn't have hid's... the factory hid housing under the rubber grommet is completely different. the ballast is mounted on top of the bulb. it's much more involved than removing clips, as there are no clips to remove. you have the standard projector lights, not hid's.

the op wants to know how to change his hid lights if a failure occures...
kinda unnecessary if you ask me as they last a long time...but the stock hid nav headlights are a nightmare to take apart as you must open the housing as i stated above.

This is what the service manual shows...you can remove it.
NOTE: The headlamp bulb should not be removed from the headlamp until just before a new bulb is installed. Removing the bulb for an extended period of time may affect headlamp bulb performance. Contaminants may enter the headlamp where they can settle on the lens and reflector. Never turn on the headlamp with the bulb removed from the headlamp.

NOTE: Make sure that the headlamp switch and the ignition switch are in the OFF position.

1. Remove the headlamp assembly. For additional information, refer to Headlamp Assembly in this section.

Expedition or Navigator halogen bulb

1. Remove the headlamp bulb access cover.

   Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the headlamp bulb.

Navigator HID headlamp

1. Remove the low beam bulb access cover.

1. Release the spring tabs and remove the HID low beam bulb.
   • Disconnect the electrical connector.

Thank you guys for the answers. The picture is worth a thousand words. Now I understand how the light and the ballast are mounted as a single piece. Hope I don't have to replace it during my ownership.
