confused Failsafe Mode

We have a 2005 Lincoln Navigator and are on vacation 14 hours from our home. This morning we started home and the car went into failsafe mode. The car was not overheated and it restarted with no problem. We turned around because we did not want to be stranded on the road. Does anyone know what causes this and is it safe to drive for 14 hours? What should I have checked on the car?

Re: Failsafe Mode

Did it go into failsafe mode immediatly after starting or after you ran it for awhile? How about the coolant level, is it full?

Thank you for the reply, We had driven the car for about 10 miles before it went into failsafe. We had the oil changed before we left and they topped off all the fluids. I stopped and checked the oil and coolant when the engine went into failsafe and they were both full.

Re: Failsafe Mode

Just to clarify we changed the oil before we left on vacation about a week ago not before we drove 10 miles.
Thanks,
Glenn

Re: Failsafe Mode

Keep an eye on the temp gauge as you go. If it stays cool, the problem is probably a sensor. I'd stop a few times and check to make sure it's not running hot to be sure.
