confused A Few Problems With 98 Navigator.

Ok, I am obviously new to this board, but not new to boards in general.

I have a 98 Navigator and have been experiencing some problems lately.

The air ride system is very loud at start up. Like the air pump is going out. A knocking sound of sorts. I wonder if this has been an issue with others and if anyone can give me some pointers instead of having to take it in for some costly repairs.

Last night on my way home from some fantastic Mexican food, POW... a manifold exhaust leak. Or what sounds like one. The previous owner told me of one time his spark plug came loose from the thread casing in the engine... or rather... the whole casing came out. Anyone with this issue before? He said the damn thing cost him 600 bucks to fix. Mostly labor time. I have not gone outside to take a look at it.. waiting for it to warm up a bit outside.

Oh... and is it possible to change the overhead dome light housing without changing the whole overhead console? That thing is freaking expensive.

That's about it for now. Any help would be great!

Danny

Re: A Few Problems With 98 Navigator.

OK, the pump for the air ride is probably going bad. I replaced a few in my time.

Exhaust leak or "popping" noise with a miss?

Exhaust manifold bolts are known to rust away and snap off at the head on the Triton engines. I have done at least 15 or 20 of these and it is not a fun job. Also the bolts at the end of the manifold will rust off where the pipe hooks up.

The spark plug deal was a known issue on some older Triton engines, but if the plug was blown out of the hole, then the engine would miss and make a "popping" noise. A visual inspection would reveal this. If the plug gets stripped out of the hole then replace the head! Do not attempt to fix the threads since it will happen again. I seen heli-coils used on this and it does not work.
