Ford expedition engine swap?

Hi, my old 98 ford expedition engine locked up the other day and i was wondering about ideas to swap the engine. Like what would fit? Would a 5.4 triton bolt up to the transmission with out and change in the bell housing or flywheel? I'm mostly hoping for a plug and play engine swap with little modification. Also things like where could i pull the engine from? Would a mercury motor work? Its a 98 ford xlt expedition with 4.6L 2v v8 in it and its 4x4. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ford expedition engine swap?

The listed transmissions for each engine are different, but, the 98 did come with a 5.4 as well. Best recommendation: find a donor Expi with a 5.4 and grab everything. Control modules, transmission, even the drive shaft.

Ever notice that there's so many high performance parts available for GM products?

Did you ever think that maybe they NEED them?

Re: Ford expedition engine swap?

All modular motors (4.6, 5.4, 6.8) have the same bellhousing pattern so any of those will bolt up to the transmission. Since it came with a 4.6 youre best bet is so buy another 4.6 2v. Another thing to consider is whether the motor has pi or npi heads and intake. Also all 4.6 2v's are the same except for the alternators, upper intake plenum and the pcv valve routing.

I would advise against a 5.4 swap unless you have the entire motor (including the intake manifold and all associated harware) and even then it wont be a plug and play affair.

None of this is too bad but it needs to be considered while getting a new motor so itll be plug and play.

Re: Ford expedition engine swap?

Hey just wondering if a 2001 f-150 5.4 will work in a 99 expedition with a 5.4? Noticed the intakes are different, f150 is plastic while my expedition's is aluminum. Already bought the engine trusting the person knew what I needed.

Controls change the most during year change, looked up part numbers on the ECU's, they share than same ones.

According to www.car-part,com, it should work.
