I have this noise happen most every time that I am cresting a hill while going down the highway, & some times as I am turning on city streets. I want to say it feels like running over a light rumble strip but just for a second.
I am assuming that it is the transfer case kicking in, but this is always on dry surface. I think this started around 30k, & have been living with it, @ 125k now.
Does any one eles know of any problems like this? is it common?
Well, don't hesitate to find out what's going on! :} Is it one of the model years that don't have the ability to switch to 2-wheel drive? You're probably right it's the 4-wheel drive kicking in, but if it's doing it over flat level going straight it could mean that a wheel sensor is bad, or it could be a tire issue, but I'm assuming that you have probably put new tires on it a could of time in that mileage.
i have the same problem! i have an 03 navigator. it sounds like rumble strips as well. mine seem to be coming from the pass rear tire! i have two sets and it does it for both so i dont believe it is a tire issue. my mine does it after an acceleration like when you resume your cruse! just for a second then back to normal! if somebody has an idea on what it may be or where to start looking let me know please!
