trying to find what engine fits on a 2000 expedition

hello, the engine on my 2000 expedition has gone bad. the rod bearings are all shewed up, this caused the crankshaft to be eaten up like a break disk. I was told to take the crankshaft off to have it repaired. the thing is im being told I need to take the tranny off. Im thinking I should just pull the engine out. If so, wouldnt it be more fesable to just swap the engine out?
so here is where I am. I know the engine says that its a windsor but I dont know how to tell if its a 5.4 or a 4.6? so how can I tell? also if its a 5.4 can I replace the engine as a direct swap with a 4.6? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks epi

If the 8th digit is a 6, it's a 4.6. If it's L A or R, it's a 5.4. It's best to stay with the same engine because all the wiring PCM and many things would have to be changed. You can search here for a used one. You'll have to know if it has an 8 or 6 bolt flywheel. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

thanks for the answer. I found on the vin that its a L8. so now that I know its a 5.4. now the question would be if I can change it for an engine from an F150. if so what years would fit. thanks

If you go to that site I posted, it'll show what will fit.

Re: trying to find what engine fits on a 2000 expedition

hello, I went to that page but the prices are pretty high.
do you know if a 5.4 triton would be the same from a 5.4 from a 2004 f250.
I found a guy that is selling it for less than $900. maybe I can get it for even less. but i dont want to commit to it unless I am sure that its the same. any place where I can find out for sure? thanks
