$492 - $595 for steering rack replacement?

Rang up a few places today about getting my p/s rack fixed. It's leaking out the seals, not the switch, and chewing through a reasonable amount of oil (needs top up every 200-300kms). Anyway I guessed around $300-350 would be the price. Not so.

One place was $492 and another place was $595. These are country town prices but usually its no different to a place such as Brisbane. These are exchange racks.

Do these prices sound reasonable? I was gonna get it done but then I remembered rego is due next month so maybe I'll hold off for a while. Plus there are a few other small things I might get done first.

I'm also thinking of going down the second hand route and seeing how much a wrecker would charge to put one in. Most wreckers usually give around 3-6mths warranty.

If anyone in the Logan/West Brisbane area is a guru at these things then maybe a cash job could be on the cards too..

Dan..

I paid $120 for mine from a wrecker and installed it myself, not an overly difficult job. Often if it's from a wrecker you wont need to do a wheel alignment, but as some know, that was not the case with mine.

Those prices were exchange reconditioned..

Yeah it doesn't look hard to do in the manual. One wrecker up near my parents wanted $150 for a supposedly good one..

Re: $492 - $595 for steering rack replacement?

I guess its a toss up - a new one would probably last another 10+ years - but do I want to keep the EA for another ten years? Not really..

Re: $492 - $595 for steering rack replacement?

I'd go buy one, a litre or so of dextron 3, whack it in yourself and get a wheel alignment done.

They aren't that hard to change, I think it's about 4 bolts and the fluid lines. At least it is on VLs.....eeek.
