You could just take it to the speed when the light comes on, and give the brakes a stab. By "stab", i mean try and lock the brakes and see if your abs cuts in
If the light comes on at speed, one of the tone wheels is out of round and sending signals to the computer that that a wheel is erratic in it's speed. The brakes will still work fine, but without ABS once the light comes on.
The trick is to take it to Ford who can tell with thier diagnositc equipment (or their might be a doco on fordmods.com) which wheel is out of round and to replace. Just pray it's not one of the rear ones, harder to get to.
Yeah it would be a tone wheel or dirty sensor. I had the same thing, only it was on all the time. Chances are pretty high you got a warped tone wheel. Cost about $10 for the wheel plus fitting.
sometimes the front wheel bearings start to loose thier grease, and it comes out the back of the wheel bearing seal and onto the tone wheel.
dust sticks to the grease and gradually fills the holes in the tone wheel, along with just generally gumming them up - jack the car up and clean the tone wheels yourself and then see how it goes, before taking it to ford.
