AU1 Brake upgrade suggestions

I've been considering an upgrade for the xr6 and just got some figures from a tyre/brake/suspension place not long ago.

Option 1 - Bigger rotors $200 - slotted
- Better pads $140 eg bendix ultimates or something

Option 2 - 330mm Twin piston AU2-3 style calipers
= Total cost of $2500 due to suspension needing to be re-engineered or something....so the story goes.

Can anyone else shed any light on the way to go ? With some planned engine mods happening I thought an upgrade from the taxi brakes I have might not be a bad idea.

What has anyone else done to resolve this - short of upgrading to a Series 2/3 or later model. Mmmm T Series or GT....

Well, option one, wont give you bigger rotors, you can not physically ft bigger rotors on your AU without going the Option two route.
I have gone the option two route, and to be honest its the best money i have ever spent on the car.
you could go the way of AUII/III, brakes but i think this would end up costing a fair bit more than option two.

Any recommendations on brand/pads if I go the 2nd option.

What exactly needs changing to fit bigger rotors etc in ???

The upright has to be modified, to remove the Boss's that come out next to the disc and to accept the bracket for the new calpiers.

As for recomendations, speak to either Race brakes, or Cebco.

I am working on that very upgrade at the moment

as for your option two:

to fit the twin piston calipers with the 330mm rotors you need to fit the T series PBR and brackets. To find those calipes i can only wish you luck!

for rotors i was lucky enough to get my hands on a prototype DBA rotor, however the 400 and the 500- DBA series will do teh job nicely which cost between 700 to 800 a pair.

I belive you can use series 2 standard uprights to fit the T series calipers, but i will test that theory next week when they arrive next week, otherwise u need to find T series uprights as well (which are 1500 new from ford :( ).

thirs u need abraided hose lines which doesnt cost too much. for my rotors I am using metal king pads, however i wouldnt use them with the 400 and 5000 thousand series as they use a softer cast and might wear the rotor too much, bendix ultimates will do just fine, however being soft compound u might have to replace them more often than harder compounds.

I am not sure if you have to exchange the brake booster or not, wil find that out once i test the new system.

all up it costing me aroun 1700 bucks, the cebco kits cost around 2500 i belive it is and the brembos cost 4000+ ...

once i got the brake upgrade sorted i will post some pics and a write up ...

The booster and master cylinder should be fine for the job.

the bore diffrence between the T series one and the std one is next to jack shit but i am not sure how much influence it will make on the pressure rise etc .. as i said ill test it and see what happens

Chief, i have had no problems with mine at all, Cebco told me that tthe differance is very small as you have said.
