This has been bugging me for a while now, need a simple answer.

IRS has always been criticised for commercial vehicles such as utes for not being able to take the load of a live axle/leaf spring setup. My question is, can't you just whack stiffer springs into the IRS to achieve the same thing? Or can you simply not get stiff enough coils?

IRS purpose in the big scheme of things is to imrpove ride & roadholding by reducing unsprung mass and having greater control over the movement of the wheel/tyre. It can't achieve those aims with overly stiff springs though they would improve load carrying.

If your priority is load carrying then things like ride & unsprung mass aren't as important. Your better served by live axles and cart springs.

Leaf springs are able to be staged by stacking leaves of different profiles. This is able to be done in a more extreme way than any progressive rate coil.
