Brake Dust On Wheels

My 2002 Escape's front wheels tend to get very dirty with brake dust. I checked with the dealer and they say that there isn't a problem on Escapes. They did admit that some Focus owners are complaining of this problem though.

I would like to know if other Escape owners are having this problem and if they are, was the problem fixed and how. Please mention in your post the model year of your vehicle.

Thanks in advance.

I've been checking another Escape discussion board in the u.s. and it also seems to be a problem there. Apparently Raybestos makes a ceramic brake pad that eliminates the dust problem.

Too bad Ford doesn't acknowledge this problem. (which they don't over here) I'm going to keep pushing my dealer to change the linings. I'll bring my discussion board "ammunition" and see what they say. I'll even gladly pay for the pads if they cover the installation labour.

hate to sound like a butt. That is not something that they are going to cover. And Ford is not responsible for eliminating brake dust, but providing a pad that has the recomended life and wear for your vehicle. It would fall into cosmetic issues and that is not a warranty issue.

Sorry, but this has been covered in other vehicles as well. From GM, Lexus, Toyota, Dodge, BMW, Mercedes and so forth. No manufacturer is going to replace pads on brakes because they cause excessive dust.

I guess the key word is excessive. I've owned many Fords in the past but I've never seen anything like this before. The front wheels get very very dirty after about a week.

I guess I'm expecting too much from Ford to install pads that don't make their vehicles look like crap.

ok I dont know what to tell you, but Ford is not going to put in another brake pad just because it causes less dust. They have contracts with the current manufacturers and that is who they are going to use.

In fact my Cobra had the brake dust issue, my wifes Honda had the brake dust issue, my Parents Lexus' had the issue and many friends of mine have/had it too on other makes. It is who the manufacturers use. A contract is a contract. They will get as much as they can out of you and spend the least and if that means that you have dusty wheels from brake dust that just means wash your car every week.

The problem I had with my cobra all I had to do was hose it off and walla it was off. You also have to understand that where you drive, how hard you drive and what you drive in( weather wise ) will affect how it looks on your cars wheels.

Last thing I can say is just change them yourself or pay some mechanic to do so. It should not cost you more than 40$ at any reputable shop. Ford is not going to replace them for you. In most cases when you go in for a brake pad replacement at Ford you can supply them with the pads you want to use and they will put them on, but you will pay for it just like you would have paid for it if you were to use theirs...ie the labor charges.

I'm going to buy the new pads and hopefully get the dealer to pay for the labour. The dealer has been very good to me so far. My whole family purchases or leases vehicles from them.

I'll probably do this before winter sets in here. It's a lot harder cleaning the wheels when it's -25C. :)

I'll come back and post my results.

I've noticed this on my Escape 2003 loan car. However, I find it is no worse than many other cars I have owned. The Escape is better though because the wheels are so easy to clean. I keep a bucket of soapy water and a dedicated sponge handy at home. All it takes is a minute per wheel to wipe the dust right off, or I can cheat and use Meguiars Non Acid Wheel Cleaner which also works A1.

I'd rather spend 2 minutes every few days and know the pads stop the car. I tried going to low dust or dust free pads before but they didn't stop nearly as well.
