Brake Pad Wear

Hi,

How thick are brake pads generally when brand new? I currently have soft compound ones on mine and am trying to determine how much life they have left. They were put on brand new about 40,000km ago.

Currently there is approx 5mm of pad left on the front ones.

Cheers

once the pads get to the thickness of the backing plate they should be replaced for optimum performance

Re: Brake Pad Wear

The brake pads I have changed were about 1/4" when there were new. On my truck they might be a little thicker. You can run them down to just before the brass rivets or the backing plate(depending on the type you are using). Most pads have wear tabs which will start squealing before they need to be replaced.
