Gday All,
Yesterday when I was at the Norwood Police Station here in SA trying to get some defects off of my mates Torana I decided to ask the officer about car lowering.
EVERY Car has a minimum height for back and front, meaning that if you have an EA GL, it doesn't necesarily mean that you can lower it to the lowest limit for an EA S!! (Note: they MIGHT be the same, but they did have different sections of them in their book). Every model is listed separately apart from Fairlane/LTDs. So just because you own an EBII GLi, it does not mean you can lower it to the lowest level of an EBII XR6 for example.
The height of the car is called the "eye brow height". This measure is taken from the underside of the lip of the wheel arch, and goes straight down in a straight line and ends at the midpoint of your wheel (centre of the axle). This height is where it is guaged from, and varies between model to model and car to car.
For example, NA Fairlane/LTDs need to have a height there of 370mm at the front, and 360mm at the back. After measuring mine, I have found that even though my car is lowered, it can still go down another 10mm on both ends. But this measure does not apply for any other models apart from NA Fairlane and DA LTD.
So when you think about lowering your car, or if you are feeling a bit worried it is too low, in SA contact either the Vehicle Inspection Centre of Transport SA, or your local police stations Traffic Office, they will be more than happy to help. For everyone else interstate, your local authorities (police, RTA, VicRoads, etc...) will be able to assist you.
I hope that helps settle the lowering debate.
