Definition of 'snow' tire required

Does anyone have the correct definition of a 'snow tire'. We are moving to Yosemite and wonder is normal road tires can be classified as 'snow' tires to avoid messing with chains ....

Thanks

Re: Definition of 'snow' tire required

Snow tire = winter tire
winter tires have totally different tread, a larger, deeper highly detailed tread with small spikes designed to give the traction necessary to most handle winter driving conditions without hydroplaing, and they dont destroy the road as chains would.

all-season (Used by most vehicals) designs won't be able to match a quality winter tire on snow and ice. even with chains which maybe illegal in some areas

visit some US tire manufactures website or ask when you find a car over there.
