EL Shocks !!!! *Help* !!!!

Hope someone here can help me. Im putting in some lower shocks and have taken the old ones out. The problem is I cant seperate the shock from the mount where it sits inside the car. When I turn the top nut the whole shock turns and there is no other nut to stop it. Mutigrips ect wont grip the shock enough to stop it turning. Is there some trick to this or am i missing something obvious.

$20.00 set of large multigrips from supa cheep and it will damage them but it works . you reach in over the brake with car jacked and wheel off and have someone turn the socket to break the nut loose.
