ford windstar steering

hi,

I have a 98 3.8 v6 windstar, im having problems with my steering. when i turn the wheel there is a lot of whining and moaning nosies being made, also sometimes it feels like ther is no power steering. I think i need to replace the power steering pump, but would the rack also need replacing?

Re: ford windstar steering

Well first replace that power steering pump, and then drive it, usually people replace racks because they got too much play from years of wear or leaking horribly or some other damage. The only way to tell is replace the pump and drive it and see how it feels.

No need to replace what doesn't need replacing, I bet you pull back and fourth on the p/s pump pulley, and its got some shaft play.
