Front End Noise on 08 Focus SES
I have a 2008 SES with automatic trans. I have a noise that occurs above maybe 30mph. It's kind of hard to describe, maybe a whiring sound, or what some would maybe take as road noise. I had a mechanic take it for a ride, and all he said was maybe tires (which tire store didn't think that was the noise), or maybe right front wheel bearing. Also, I had Ford dealership service guy take a ride yesterday, and he said that he agreed with me, that it sounds like coming from the left side, not the right. Said maybe wheel hub assembly. Then he adding that I needed a suspension specialist look at it and that a diagnostic check would only be $100, and that would be credited towards the repair. The other sound that the car is making in that area is, that after you have driven it for a few minutes/miles, and you come to a slow stop, or just drive very slow (maybe 5-15 or so) there is the sound of what I would describe as gears meshing, or bearings going bad). I thought that is was coming from the left front, but then last night I was stretching myself to the right to listen as I was driving very slow, and it seemed to come from the right. I was wondering if both sounds were generating from the right side cv joint axle that has the bearing on the shaft, or is it the wheel bearings? Don't want to pay for diagnostics, and the price that they (Ford) want for the parts. They want $400 for a wheel bearing and a cv axle shaft.
Also, other questions (sorry), does anyone know what size the axle nut is on the 2008? Does trans fluid come out when you pull the shaft out, if so, how much? How hard is it getting the shaft out and back in?
Thanks guys, was thinking of starting on the job tonight out in the driveway.
OH YEA, what is the best parts to buy in the way of Hub assys, and cv joint shafts.
