Front Spring Dilemma. Please help!

I wanted to lower the front of my TC 250 Cortina so I went to pedders and got a quote on springs, $167 for the pair, they would lower the front to 490mm, from the original 530mm.

I have heard that Pedders just use King springs and repaint them red. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Trying to take the cheap option I thought I'd go and get some king springs. I got quoted $130, great. But for $120 I could get lovells which were exactly the same as the kings apparently.

So I'm feeling good, what a bargain hunter I am etc. The lovells get put in and then I'm not feeling very good at all because they only lowered the front 20mm instead of the 30-40mm I was expecting.

So now I'm stumped. I'm prepared to take the loss on the lovells and get the pedders (which I should have got in the first place), but what if they only lower it 20mm as well, I'd be absolutely ropeable.

So what I'm trying to ask is does anyone know if these lovells I have will be the same as the pedders springs or will the pedders be lower?

Any other opinions or comments welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Front Spring Dilemma. Please help!

King Springs make their springs in 3 heights standard, low 30mm to 40mm lower then stock and super lows which are 50mm to 60mm lower then stock.

Re: Front Spring Dilemma. Please help!

Is there any settling in period for low front springs? If yes, then how far are they likely to drop?

When they first went in they were actually 20mm higher than stock! After I went for a drive they went down 40mm to be only 20mm lower than stock.

Its been two days now and they havnt lowered any further.

Also I just kept the standard cortina shocks in there. If I went and put in the pedders lowered sports ryder shocks do you think that would let the lovells sit a bit lower?

Thanks.

Were you only interested in lowering the car, or changing the ride as well?? If it is only a drop in height you are after, why not cut a coil off the originals?

Lowering was the main aim but an improvement in ride would be nice too. Plus I dont want it to massively bone jarring.

And I wont be cutting any coils for various reasons.

I cut 1.5 coils off mine. Cutting them shorter actually make them a touch stiffer, and the design on cortinas (not using flat ends) lends itself well to this modification.

You did ask for the cheapest method!

Re: Front Spring Dilemma. Please help!

Depends where you took your measurements from. The best way is to measure from the u/side of the guard to the bottom of the wheel RIM. Remember that your Cortina is old, and your springs will have settled quite a lot. The ride height now is more than likely 25 odd mm below the original stock height, which is what the spring makers work to. Springs do settle in over a period, and this can be anything up to 12 months. As far as the springs go, different spring makers use different techniques, but the end result is usualy the same, i.e.: springs. compression rates may differ slightly, but the wire size will be constant, as will the composition. I have had Lovells, Pedders and Kings, not all in the same car, and all lasted well, and performed well too. The only real difference is the colours they paint them.

For what its worth...

I had K-Mac springs in my corty, The great thing about K-Mac's are that you can specify the exact height when you order, When installed mine have always been spot on.

BTW, I've got Kings in my XR8 now and I will be definately going back to K-Mac next tine...

chop them, the problems associated with cut springs comes from people cuttin 25% or more of the stock wornout old spring, cutting a little bit of a new heavier spring won't harm anything, as already stated they are firmer when you cut them, its free too.

Re: Front Spring Dilemma. Please help!

What part number were you supplied???

There may be another part number you can swap over that will get it down another 20mm.

Have you spoken to the people you purchased them from?
