leaking rack

Hi all, went to Peddars today for knocking/clunking noise over bumps in my 50000k au. Prognosis was leaking rack seals (it is slightly leaking from rubber boot) they informed me if the seal completly fails I will have steering failure.....(mmmm probably heavy steering, but failure ah yeah!) The quote was $698 for it to be repaired also replacing the two 'D' bushes on sway bar.

I will strip it and go for a changeover unit myself. Anyone recommendations on changeovers? Thanks

Re: leaking rack

I recently bought and replaced the rack in my EL. The new rack cost $400 odd, including new tie rod ends, and it took about an hour. I don't know about the AU, but there are a few little tricks with the EL in order to get the rack off easily. I can tell you if you wish.

"D" rubbers on the sway bar: about $40 and 20 minutes. Get eurothane ones, they last longer and are more stable.

Re: leaking rack

Thanks Creature3, yes there are a few tricks. The last one I did was on a VL commodore. I 'll bet there are a few nuances to take care of!
