Mix n matching rubber

Dumb question time.

I want to get another set of rims n wheels for when I take the car down to the track for quarter mile fun. The evil half doesn't appreciate her tyres being prematurely worn out on our only everyday car.

I have 17's with 235/45 series rubber all round.

Do I need to replace the rears with 17" rims or can I go a different smaller size eg 16's and balance it out with bigger rubber ? Are there any side affects to doing this ?

If I can find some cheap 17's I'll just buy them but i think the cost of the rubber may be the bigger issue. After all they're just gonna get fried.

Re: Mix n matching rubber

For going down the quarter you don't have to worry about matching rim sizes...

I have 17's all round, but last time I went to calder I had the original 15's fitted on the rear with a set of M&H drag radials.
This is IMHO the best way to go if you are going to have a set of rims soley for the purpose of drag racing. Tyres will be about $250ea for 15's and I'm sure you could pick up a set of 15x7 inch steel rims for next to nothing.
Will help shave valuable 10ths off your times too, tho with the extra grip it will put more stress on your drivetrain.
