No I didn't prime them, just gave the calipers a good clean. It will be interesting to see how long they last. I did the hubs about a month or so after the brakes and it seems to have held up so far!
I thought of yellow actually, but then decided that it might look too much so I chickened out and stuck with the red.

We have done the same thing with our black XR, shall have pics up as soon as the film is developed. Pretty much the same, but we painted the hubs siver, looks nice and clean. Also thought of yellow like those on a porsche, but it wouldn't tie in with any other colours on the car.
As for the paint coming off, they were cleaned with a wire brush as well as cleaning stuff. We used the paint in the spray can, couldn't find any of the brush-on paint. Had to give it lots, and I mean HEAPS of coats because the paint was so thin. They still look good, but need a clean and a bit of a touch up in places where some of the paint came off when dad was fitting it back on or something.
Only thing left is to to do the Tickford logos in silver on the front ones.
there is a product out at the mo for brake calipers specifically.. It has its own spray on cleaner & brush on applicator, I think from memory that the paint was an enamel....
Apparently the ducks nuts??!!
