hey all,

prepare to be astounded by my complete lack of knowledge regarding anything technical in relation with cars.

When I drive along bumpy roads, i get a tapping like noise coming from the backend. As the rear suspension rides over the bumps it jiggles about and makes this noise.

I wasthinking that maybe the bushes(?) might need replacing? (well thats what a mate suggested)

Bear in mind that it is an EA and was on blocks for the best part of 5 years. As far as Im aware all the original components are still in it so i guess there would be a fair chance the bushes have gone brittle.

Also, it still has the original shocks on. Do shocks have a 'best before' date, or do they need replacing as per how many Km's they've travelled?

Most likely shocks (seals may have deteriorated when on blocks) or bushes as you have diagnosed. See you do now about technical stuff.

EA bushes weren't great to start with (better from ED-on) and factory shocks go from OK to poor with as little as 20~40 thousand kays on them. How many km's on the car now?

OR,

Maybe somethings just loose. Slide under there and make sure everything is done up tight (remember top shock mounts) and that all clamps, hoses and cables are restrained as they should be.

as we speak just clocked 68,000 this morning. So I guess its time for some new shocks. Thing is though, being a brock, i was under the impression the shocks arent standard, so i'd imagine they are of better quality than the OEM gear...

Probably right with the shocks being better than OEM, maybe the bushes too.

However the car is now over 10years old and despite having low kays and having been on blocks for 5 years I wouldn't be surprised if the shock seals &/or bushes have deteriorated causing the tapping noise.
