rear struts 97 taurus lx

approx ten months ago we heard a groaning noise from the back right wheel area, took to garage said its was rotors and brakes. both rear were replaced. three months later noticed noise again to back to dealer said it is diffently bearings were shot. replaced both rear bearings. later on noise still there took to independent mechanic he found that the spring coil had broke in two. replaced both rear spring coils and also strut mounts. left gharage, next day noise still there. the graon is more apparent first thing in the morning when i pull out of driveway at a slow speed and is there for only a few moments. also is there when it is really hot out. i heard that sometimes the struts dry out and that get lubricated once you start to drive the car?? could this be my noise?? any suggestions would appreciated. thanks

Re: rear struts 97 taurus lx

does the noise happen only when hitting bumps, or is it a constant groan. cause constant groan would lead more to a bearing than a shock sound. Dry shocks should only moan when they are either sliding in or out, such as when you turn a corner, or hit any bumps.

Re: rear struts 97 taurus lx

it is not a constant groan. it is intermitent. like i said it goes away after a few feet of driving. but does come back when it is hot out or after long drives. and yes you can hear when going over bumps at a slow speed when it is hot out or driving a long distant. thanks

Do you notice a rusty deposit on the brake rotors? Being in ontario is it after rain or being left out with moisture around all night? I get a groaning occasionally and it's from the brake rotors going rusty. Noise goes away once the deposits are gone.

Re: rear struts 97 taurus lx

the groan is there after every morning. more so after a good rain and has sat overnight. no as for the rust deposit. it also gives this groaning noise if it is really hot outside and if i drive it for a long distant.

Check the park brake mechanisim. Mitsubishi Magna/Diamante had issues with the park brake shoes binding after they are released. We had to chamfer the shoes and lube the pivots.

Re: rear struts 97 taurus lx

I'm going park brakes. If the Taurus uses the drum type park brake it starts to make sense with servo effect etc.
