Hey,

I have a squeaking/creaking sound coming from my front passenger side. At first I thought it was the ball joint so I looked at that and it was old and worn and needed replacement. I replaced it but the noise is still there. I only hear it when I go over bumps and what not. I was thinking that it might be the shocks but wasn't sure.

How can I tell if the shocks need replacement or are making noise?

If they need to be replaced about how long does it take?

What else could it be?

Sorry to say it, but almost any older car you step into is gonna have some sort of suspension / driveline noise.. this colud be the shocks, worn bushes, steering related, anything in the engine bay lose, etc..

IF it is the shocks, they can be replaced while you wait by a professional, but the front shocks are probably a bit of a time-consuming job if you haven't done them before (rear springs took me about 3-4 hours, and front are harder usually). Be careful if you do them yourself, you'll need spring compressors to get the springs out safely (without taking out someones eye)..
