Tyres for 16in rims

Can any of you guys tell me if there are any disadvantages to putting 40 or 45 series tyres on 16in rims. How far would they put the speedo reading out?Anything else I should know.
Thanks-----Greg

Re: Tyres for 16in rims

The 40 or 45 figure is a percentage of the width, it's not a height in itself. So it would depend on the width of the tyre.
If you go from a 225/50-16 (the standard size for EB-EL 16" wheels) to 225/45-16 it will put your speedo out (and look silly IMHO) however, if you go 245/45-16 it will maintain your speed accuracy.

Re: Tyres for 16in rims

However, unless this is a 16x7.5 or 16x8 rim, anything wider than 225 would be illegal. 7" wide = widest legal is 225

225/45R17 wouldn't be legal either because it'd be about 23mm too small, and legal limit is 15mm.

In other words, just get some really good tyres and don't change the size.

Re: Tyres for 16in rims

have a look at a tyre calculator site to see how far out your speedo will be.

Re: Tyres for 16in rims

Well I am running 225/45ZR16 ES100's and happy with them.

The speedo will read about 8% fast. You need to change the speedo drive gear to correct it. That will cost about $10.

The lower profile lowers the overall cars gearing by 8% as well of course so it's exactly like changing to a 3.45 diff. Well sort of anyway depending on what you have now.

The AUII 16" alloy rims will be legal with 225's and as long as the load rating is above 90 or whatever's on your door tyre placard the profile itself isn't a legal issue.

Any wider than a 255 on a 7" rim gets a bit to sloppy, in the sidewall.
