Question Tyres

It's finally new rear tyres time for my 96 Fairmont Ghia, so I'm after some opinions (I know everyone loves these questions :)). The car has XR6 suspension and wheels, so tyres needed are 225/50R16.

Currently on the front are two three-month old Michelin Pilot HX MXM's - I love them and would put two more on the back, except they are way out of my price range (the ones I got for the front were used (but only slightly) and hence cheaper).

Requirements in tyre are:
- as grippy as possible (wet being probably more important than dry).
- reasonable wear (I consider 40,000kms out of a set of tyres reasonable).
- $200ish per tyre (can stretch to $250 if it's worth it).

The shortlist so far (without doing too much research):
- Goodyear F1
- Bridgestone Grid 2 (or is it 3 nowadays?)

So, any opinions of these, or other possibles? How much do Yoki A359's go for - seeing as everyone seems to love them?

Cheers,
Matt

I have just put a set of Dunlop LeMans 702's on my AU2 XR8. I must say that I had a set of Dunlop FM901's on and had to swap to these new ones becasuse if the noise factor. They were only a couple of months old. The new 702's are a hell of alot quieter and they perform pretty good so far so go and check them out. I don't know what price they would be in 16's though so I can't help you there.

I just did a 40,000km rotation on the Toyos fitted to my wagon. These are the Proxes FZ4 (225 50 16s on a 8" rim) and I am very happy with them. A while ago I did a similar reply where i thought mine were wearing a little quickly, but that was around 10,000km ago and there's no reason why I can't get another 10,000.

I have heard a rumour that these have now been replaced with something that doesn't wear so well - but I'll definatly look at Toyos again.

Cheers

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, my 'short'-list is getting quite long. Will make a decision when I go to the tyre shop tomorrow based on price and the opinions I hear there.

I was recommended to a set of Yoko A 539s on my EF wagon a couple of years ago - they were so bad the dealer took them back. Literally couldn't keep the car in a straight line - did three alignments trying different setups before giving up on them. The suspension on the car is far from standard, was set up previously with Dunlop Bathurst 1000s, and still seem to suit it the best.

Try the Firehawk SZ50s. I just got 2 of these in 235/45/17 on my car for $210 each. They are pretty much a wet weather tyre, but are also good in the dry - already I've noticed some of the understeer i experienced with my Dunlop ss001s has gone.
