hey guys, just in need of some advice so here i am. ok, i had some bad car vibrations a while back and got new tyres, solved a bit of the shake but still there though a bit about 100km/h and gets a bit worse the faster i go. took it to the shop to see wot they thought was causing this shake (its not terrible or anything but wheel shake gets up my nose hardcore!!) anyway, i have been told that my inner and outer tie-rod ends need replacing and i think he said my casters need replacing (castors??) and there was something else in the vacinity there that need new rubbers. $420 was the price quoted for all parts and labour inc. wheel allignment and camber adjusting and the works... just wondering wot in ur opinion would b the way to go. 1. is that an alright price? 2. how much in parts would i be up for to have my mechanically minded friend help me with labour?

any advice greatly appreciated. i live in brisbane too, anyone know any other reputible operators. cheers

i would get the wheel balancing check, as this can sent vibrations thought the car, have you checked the roadwheel nuts are done up tight?

wheel allignment, this only needs doing when the car drifts or if you have hit a kerb or something simlairwhat you need to do is find a nice straight road (that shouldnt be a problem over there) take your hands off the wheel & see what what the car does, if it drifts left/right then the wheel allignment might need looking at.

keep in mind that most roads arent laid flat. they are layed on an incline from the middle of the road to the edge. (middle being the high point and each edge being the low point). although the incline is often very slight and sometimes unnoticable to the driver it is still there for the sole reason of draining water from the road and not have one great big long sheet of water laying on the road. when testing allignments on these roads the slightest incline can make you believe your alignment is out. if no one is around drive on the wrong side of the road and compare the results to the left side.

Tie rod ends for an XB should only be about $30 each. Alignment about $40. He could mean your camber bolts need replacing (not sure on the price of those, say $30 each - anyone?). Rubbers to be replaced could be anything, but most probably sway bar rubbers and possibly radius rod ones. A rough guesstimate could be about $200 for parts. Assuming they charge $60 per hour for labour (my figures could be a bit old here) they could be allowing 4 or so hours to do it.

Another cause for vibration is a tailshaft out of balance - doesn't take too much - bit of a knock or crook unis. Make sure you pinpoint the cause before forking out. Might pay to stick your head under and check the front end rubbers, and also check for excessive play in the unis.

i have simex tyres on at the moment, which im really happy with. they are only 4months old approx. but yeah i think i will get under and have a squize. i would be dirty if i forked out money and didnt fix it. actually the guy said "yeah that seems to be it, a good place to start anyway", Hmmmmmm makes me wonder. i will definately pay a visit to my mechanically minded friend.

cheers guys

i got another shop to look at it today, and they re-balanced my wheels and one was out, took it for a burn tonight and it seemed heaps better still a little bit, will really give it some punishment up the highway tomorrow and will c how it goes. also they said that my rear engine mount was pretty stuffed and that it could b leading to some of the vibration, it this true, i have never heard of it before. is it the same sorta thing as a tail shaft being out?
