Which direction? rim width or height?

If its height you can go 2" over the highest factory fitted wheel.

XF's came with the snowflakes on the fairmont so wouldnt this mean you could go to 17 * 9 as the snowflakes are 15 * 7?

The law about 3 years ago was that you couldn't exceed your wheel track by 25mm, I had 14x8's 12 slotters on the back of my XF and got defected. The best thing to do would be to go to the rta and ask them because the rules are always changen

xespack - Yeah, from what I understand, you can go up to 17" because of the snowflakes being 15" (15" are listed on all XF tyre placards). But I dont know about the width.

The rule used to be 2 + 2 , 2 inches + in diameter and 2 cm in width.So you could go to 17" and 235.

235 is the tyre width it doesnt affect the wheel track because the measuments are taken from the centre of the tyre. The law is you cannot exced the wheel track by 25mm and the outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheeland tyre combination specified for the vehicle.
