1994 aerostar

I have a 1994 ford aerostar with a 3.0 engine and a bad tranny I have been told that unless it was originally for a 3.0 engine I could not use any other tranny does anyone know if this is true or not and if it isn't can sumone please tell what else has the same bell housing to engine block bolt pattern as the 3.0! Thank you

If finding a trans in your area is hard, a rebuild would be a viable option. Just make sure you take it to a custom/specialty shop. A lot of folks that I know of (and read about) that have gone to a transmission shop have had variable results, as you really don't know who will be working on your transmission (student!). You can also check out Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto and search for a trans in your area. The Aersotar was made until 1997 with a 3.0L engine, anything up until '97 should fit just fine. You can also phone a dealer service department to confirm.

Re: 1994 aerostar

I do thank you for your reply but what i wanted to know really was is it possible to use a regular 3 speed tranny like say out of a ford ranger that had maybe a 2.8 er 2.9 or maybe even a four cylinder , or maybe even an older modle tranny with for example a bell housing for a inline 6 cylinder,I would really like to get away from the overdrive tranny but would still like it to be an automatic! in my area the over drive tranny with this hilly area runs to hot and shifts it's self to death!

Re: 1994 aerostar

If you currently have a 4 speed, stick with a four speed. It all comes down to the wiring harness for the transmission, and if it will be compatible with the PCM (central vehicle computer). With it being a '94, you shouldn't have too many problems but again, going from say a 4 speed to a 3 speed probably won't work. Going from a 3 speed to a 4 speed could work, but I'm just guessing on that one. Perhaps one of the transmission guru's will post up shortly.

Re: 1994 aerostar

Again thanks for the quick reply but it's loosing something in the translation i think. I am talking about a automatic tranny with over drive ( aka 4 speed) and changing to a automatic tranny without over drive ( aka 3 speed) in other words the van came factory with a automatic overdrive and i want to put an automatic without overdrive in it ( sorry for the confusion) but i have been told that the bell housing bolt pattern for a 3.0 V6 will not match up with any other like for instance a 2.8 or 2.9 my qustion was is that true or if i can find a non overdrive tranny for a 2.8 or 2.9 will they bolt to a 3.0? Again I am truely sorry for the confusion!

Re: 1994 aerostar

Doesn't it have a Overdrive D position and a Drive position? Check the owners manual and see if you could just have the normal trans and just use the Drive without overdrive. Then if you ever get out on a highway, you can use the Overdrive for better mileage.
