It appeared to be coming mostly from the general area near the head gasket, although that is not my head gasket just a picture I used to confirm my lack of knowledge on the engine.

So I drive about 2 miles into the nearby town, leave it idling at the gas station, and when I come there is smoke coming through the vents near the windshield. Concerned about overheating I cranked up the heater and cruised back home at about half speed(it wasn't overheating).

Please tell me that smoke coming off the engine and appearing to come mostly from the area of the head gasket could be something less than an emergency. There really wasn't that much smoke at all either.

Correction:

It is definitely water. Suspecting a bad hose somewhere behind the engine block is the culprit as there is some moisture of some sort back there... I don't think there's much to do about it as I'm not exactly sure what the problem is but anyway any help of knowledge of common problems may help.

Coolant was low and shows signs of corrosion inside. Could it be that low coolant contributed to a leaking hose somewhere behind the engine?

You may have a hose leak between the Heater Core and the Water Pump
