Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

Mainly worked on going through the gound locations and found: three in the front and one on the passanger side of the engine compartment, two under the driver's kick pannel, one behind the slidding driver's side door, one more under the driver's tail light. Last but not least there's one under the REM. After I was done I noticed that the radio's light blinked for a spell and the speedo would jump at 45 a couple of times. I'm going to double check again, but have I missed any? Figured that I could start over here again and see if I missed anything that would prevent fuse #8 from turning off.

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

The 3 in the front, do you mean under the hood? There are 3 under the hood 3 under the passenger kick panel, 1 on left B pillar, 1 at r/rear quarter panel, 2 behind LH kick panel, 1 behind left tail light area.

Did you get the power to fuse #8 yet?

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

* There are 3 under - got these
* Under the passenger kick panel - found the grounds under the driver's, but haven't checked the passenger side
* 1 on left B pillar, 1 at r/rear quarter panel, 2 behind LH kick panel, 1 behind left tail light area. - got all these

Power to fuse 8 is what I was working on. I removed the jump wire and the fuse stayed powered for about three hours. When I put the jump back on it I heard the click and it again stayed powred for hours. Played around looking for broken wires, loose connections etc and found nothing. Then I was told that it may be a faulty ground that is making it act like this so I started to dig around for these.

So far I found that the fuse will keep power after the initial jump. So, I trying to find if there is something between the power distribution block and the fuse block. There has to be something there that is not working until I give it a kick with the jump. If I can find this I think I will have it solved.

Thanks and let the fun continue

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

Just checked the wires to the fuse box and I have no power larger black/dark blue with the green strip. I also just pulled the power distribution box apart and there is power going into that wire on the bottom of this location. So, it looks as if that wire has a break in it some place? If you were working on this would you pull the wire harness apart or just try to run the same wire color code and gauge along side of it?

I found a fourth ground under the hood. It's located along side of the strut tower on the pass side and it seems to be a factory one. Then there was one that looks rigged under the knee panel under on the driver's side. The was just wrapped around a bolt and I'll fix this later.

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

If you mean the fuse box inside, the dark blue/light green should have power from fuse #196 under the hood. Take fuse 106 out and see if there's power in one of the pins where the fuse was. Then switch the fuse with another 30 amp and see if the fuse is broken inside and not feeding the circuit.

confused Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

The dark blue with the green strip that is getting power is under the power distribution box under the hood. I then went and pulled the inside fuse box and checked the same color wire that goes into the connector on the top right of the fuse box and that is the one without power. Is this the one that you said to check?

"Fuse 106 under the hood feeds the circuit to 8 under the dash. It's the only place it goes from 106 with a Dark blue/ light green tracer wire. In the under dash paney it feeds that fuse and the Accessory delay relay. Just worry about fuse 8 and the wire and fuse 106 for now."

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

That's the one. Now if you can see where the wire is broken. That wire feeds another circuit too. Follow that harness and see where it's broken and losing power. I think you're getting somewhere.

Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

Thanks and I hope to get to that in the am. My list is still a bit long, but with each thing I fix it gets a bit shorter. With the above I still need to get the keyless system working, but I think the keyless module is blown. This will be after the wiring.

confused Re: 2001 Windstar electrical stuff

I have power to that wire. Didn’t know that it was on a switched lead and it does works with ignition switch on. So, now what direction should I go? Do you think that there’s a short inside the fuse box itself. I have this issue with fuse 8 and the one for the counsel power point? Could this also involve the REM? I still have to jump the wires to the passenger side running and brake light to get them to work and the interior lights, power locks etc.. are run through there as well? I am going to go back to the rear of the van and see if I can find anything?

Fuse 106 under the hood should have power all the time. Have you checked it with no jumper to the fuses inside?
