89 Ford Aerostar Rough Idle

We have an 89 Ford Aerostar. It runs great other than it idles rough all the time. We've replaced the fuel filter. When I do a computer test on it, I get codes 22, 12 and 11. Can anyone tell me what those codes are and what they mean?

Thank you

Jaime

It's most likely the IAC (idle air control) valve. It controls the amount of air entering the engine at idle and does get gummed up after a while. You can pull it off and clean it with carb cleaner or just replace it. Should take care of the problem.

Re: 89 Ford Aerostar Rough Idle

If I recall the codes should mean the following

22: MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure, for speed-density cars) or BP (Barometric Pressure, for mass-air cars) sensor signal out of range. Suspect MAP or BP sensor and harness.

12: PCM could not increase idle speed above normal idle during KOER high RPM idle check. Suspect throttle body coking.

11: No problems found

With the 22 you should get the check engine light on. I would first look at the IAC first and check MAP sensor for damage also look at the TB for any carbon build up.

Could you tell me where the IAC is on our 89 Ford Aerostar? I would like to check that before we do anything. Thank you for your response 92 BigBronco and thank you for yours LunaticSVT. I found the codes online and that's what they both said. The check engine light is not coming on in the van at all.

The Idle Air Control Valve is a solenoid valve mounted on the throttle body. The IAC valve enables air to bypass the throttle plate to trim the idle speed to suit the various
engine loading requirements.

I have attached a picture of one from an I6. But you should be able to determine from the looks of it to locate yours.

Thanks for your reply and picture attached LunaticSVT. We found the IAC. Haven't taken it off yet and cleaned it though, will do that very soon.

Re: 89 Ford Aerostar Rough Idle

We took the plug out of the IAC and the van started idling alot worse and died, then we took the IAC off and cleaned it, put it back on and it didn't make a difference. We then pulled the plug out of it again and it idled the same as it did with the plug in. Is this normal? Is there a computer code if the IAC is bad?

Thank you!

jamie
IAC if you unplug it ,it should make a difference of rpm from one way to the other. If it dont I would guess it not to be working.

Re: 89 Ford Aerostar Rough Idle

Yendor,

We found out our Aerostar has a blown head gasket, luckily my boyfriend knows alot about engines. He is tearing down the engine now and is going to replace both head gaskets and the other gaskets. I just hope that's all that's wrong with it.

Thank all of you for all your suggestions and advice, I will update you on how the van is running after the gaskets are replaced.

Re: 89 Ford Aerostar Rough Idle

is this one the of the 3L V6? If so they are notorious for this.

if he is replacing the gaskets make sure that he uses the new bolts as they have recommended in the TSB.

Also, I apologise that I did not respond sooner. I seem to have missed your response earlier..
