I'm a chevy guy so not used to the fords, trying to help a buddy he has an interesting problem with his 94 aerostar auto Tranny w/OD ignoring some of his minor problems with the van his main issue is with getting the van out of park after it's started the van will start in park or neutral however if he starts the van in park he cannot shift out of park. if he starts the van in neutral he can shift through RN(OD)D21 if he shifts it into park he has to shut it off shift to neutral and start again. any Idea's?

You have to depress the brake pedal to get the transmission to release the shifter linkage so you can shiftfrom park, once out of park it will let you shift to any other gear.
On mine theres a little sticker on the dash just to the right of the steering wheel that says so :D

a ford is a ford is a ford.....we have had the same problem with some of our lincolns, there is a switch that is on the upper part of the brake pedal, if it is shorting out or loose, it will not allow the transmission to shift out of park while running. You can, as you decribed, with the engine off, shift into nuetral then start the car, and you can shift all you want as long as you don't put it in park....

on some models, the brake light switch and the lockout switch are combined into one irritating part
