I was driving home from my sister's work. We were waiting for the light, and when it turned green, i hit the gas, and it went for a bit then the van started making a loud whining sound, and it wouldn't go forward. I was lucky enough to switch three lanes and park at a bus stop. I tried to go forward, but no go. I put it in reverse, and it went, but there was no way I was going to drive home in reverse so I had it towed. Any ideas as to what is wrong? The van is a 1995 Windstar, with a 3.8L engine. Any ideas would help, thank you.

You'll need to have a trans shop run some tests. There could be a code stored. You could try this to see if you get any codes. Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test

I had the mechanic look at it. He says it's the differential, and that it'd be better to just replace the whole transmission.

The differential works in reverse too. I'd say the transmission needs replacing or overhauling too.
