Cruising along fine then suddenly, WHAM it downshifts into 2nd for no reason, throwing everyone forward etc

Take it to Autozone and see what codes they pull. Is it still in second?

Hi, I would guess that you either have a speed sensor problem or a MLPS manual lever position sensor problem. The speed sensor could be telling the transmission that it is going slower than actual speed. And the MLPS electrically tells the solenoids what gear to be in. In the newer vehicles there is no mechanical connection from the shift lever to the valve body.
