brake lights stay on after exiting vehicle

just had to rapid charge my wife's battery in our 2001 windstar...i noticed after i started the van the brake lights came on even though i was never in the vehicle? i'm assuming this is causing a short in the system.

any suggestions on how to fix this problem

Check the brake light switch, located on the brake pedal.
