Hi all! 97 E-150 5.4 with 225,000 miles. Wifes daily driver. Started running rough after filling up. First changed the fuel filter (it was time anyway), code scan revealed, 0171, 0174, 0401, 0304. It was time to change the plugs, so they were changed, # 4 cop changed, and cleaned the tubes to the EGR valve. Success, ran great for about 10 miles. Now have a 0302, 0401 codes. Pulled the # 2 plug to see if it fouled and changed the cop. Clleared and ran again for about 10 miles and now getting a 0307, ok changed that cop and changed the DPFE sensor. Still have the 0401 so I changed the EGR valve. Now I have no codes, however the van runs like crap. Changed the pcv valve to day, still bad. Idle is rough, when you get on the throttle it runs better, much better, but when the tranny shifts into 3rd right after the rpms drop, it runs horrible (stumbling). Any and all suggestions will help. Want to make her last another 100,000 if I can!!!

Try cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner. If you unplug it and it runs better, the problem is the MAF. Dirty or defective.

Thanks for the tip, but I already cleaned the MAF. As a matter of fact, I forgot to reconnect it after one of my many times taking the air intake assembly and the van ran terrible.

Have you cleaned the throttle body?

Thats next on the list. I'm thinking vacuum leak. Spent the last few days (when I get time to work on the old girl) checking vacuum lines and boots, so far nothing! Throttle body is next. Thanks

Ok, throttle body cleaned. Took for test drive, rough idle, acceleration great, but stumbles after shifting @ around 45mph. Ran it hard, lots of hard acceleration. Now I have a 0307 again!!! New plug and COP and boot!!! (and naturally #7 is the total b*tch to get to!) I am totally baffled!!!

It could be bad fuel causing the problem. I'd try the coil in another, easy to get to location to see if it still causes trouble there. Are these coils made in the USA or China? We've had terrible problems when we find Chinese made coils.

Not sure of the manufacturing country. As soon as she cools down, I'll swap the coil to another location and see if it happens again!

Ok, did the swap, no codes but still running terrible. All symptoms are the same. I just cannot figure this one out.
