Power Windows on 96 Windstar

The other day our drivers side window stopped functioning with the switch. The passenger side quit about one year ago and it's time to get it fixed.

The window never had ANY problems with going up but not down, or slow to roll up or down. There is no noise on either side that indicates that it's trying to work.

If both happened together, I would have guessed a fuse, but this time I have no idea what it could be..

Any ideas what to look for? I am ok with taking the door panel off.

It's probably the motor. If you hold the switch to oerate the window and tap the bottom of the door with a rubber mallet, it will probaly move. That means the brushes are worn and the tap gives them another very short life.

I meant to say the window never had ANY problems going up OR down. Still the motor?

Which side to tap the rubber mallet on?

Just on the bottom of the door while holding the switch up or down with the key on.

Just out of curiosity, what if that doesn't work?

Wouldn't the windows be slow to roll down or anything if the motor was going out?

No, they wouldn't be slow unless there was a binding in the tracks. One way to also do a check is to turn the key on and hit the switch. The dome light should dim slightly to let you know there's no problem with the switch or wiring. Don't be afraid to tap it on the bottom. A metal hammer could put a dent with a much lighter tap. The rubber mallot will just jar the brushes if the motor is going out. If tapping it doesn't do anything, then you have an electrical problem.

So, I smacked the ever loving crap out of the bottom of the door with a rubber mallot and it didn't budge. The switch DID dim the light though.

It shows that it probably is the motor. Try smacking it more and make sure the switch is being pressed enough to dim the light when you do. I really think that will jar it. You will need a motor pretty soon though.
